This is a Japanese version of a demijohn, called an "Ittobin". This translates to 18 litres (which is 5 gallons). Domestic manufacturing started 150 years ago. It is basically a big size unit of measurement and used commonly for sake, shoyu, water, vinegar and other solvents.
I'm not going to lie, I am addicted to these and have them all over the house! They are beautiful pieces of history.
Antique so there are some signs of wear as seen in the additional photos. The bubbles are gorgeous!
